“THERE IS ONE THING MORE YOU MUST DO. GO AND SELL WHAT YOU HAVE AND GIVE TO THE POOR…THEN COME FOLLOW ME.” MARK10/21
I read Pope John Paul II ‘s encyclical on social concern “Sollicitudo Rei Socialis” this summer. It was one of the best things I read while in captivity. The Pope speaks directly to the problem of world poverty and the worsening conditions in Third World nations. He places the blame and the responsibility on the two competing ideologies and the Super Powers they represent. He took a critical look at both systems and found them “in need of radical correction.” The following quotes come from the Pope’s encyclical & relate to this weeks gospel: “This then is when there are some people – the few who possess much…they are hindered by the cult of having; and there are others – the many who have little or nothing…”
“Side-by-side with miseries of underdevelopment…we find ourselves up against a form of super development.. this super development, which consists in an excessive availability of every kind of material good for the benefit of certain social groups, easily makes people slaves of “possession” and of “immediate gratification.”
“The goods of this world are originally meant for all. The right to private property is valid and necessary but it does not nullify the value of (the principle of Christian social doctrine). Private property in fact is under a “social mortgage.” “The evil does not consist in having as such, but in possessing without regard.”
“IT IS EASIER FOR A CAMEL TO PASS THROUGH A NEEDLE’S EYE THAN FOR A RICH MAN TO ENTER THE KINGDOM OF GOD.” Mark10/25
ANNE’S FALL DINNER: A pat on the back for all who added their energies and talents to this years Fall Dinner at St. Anne’s. It was a big success and well attended. It is supposed to be a fundraiser (which it is) yet it is always something more. It’s one time in the year when the Parish pulls itself together to work on one common project. It is our chance to show our hospitality to the larger community. Job well done!
ANNE’S PICTURE DIRECTORY: Sunday, Oct. 16 and Monday, October 17th the photographer will be in Logan to take family and individual pictures for the Parish Picture Directory. If you haven’t already, PLEASE sign up for a time to get your picture taken. A few minutes effort insures your photo will be added to the rest of the parishes. Such books tend to gain value as years go by. Don’t be left out.
WELCOME THE BISHOP: Next week Bishop Bullock will be on hand to celebrate the 11th Anniversary of Holy Family Parish.
