You probably read about it or saw us on TV. I just want to let you know that our witness at SAC on August 6th went very well. In the best of the tradition of non-violence, we were able to make our statement about the Farm Crisis and the Arms Race while at the same time keeping the whole effort within the confines of the spirit of non-violence. We have not only ourselves to thank, but also our friends on the other side of the “lines”, the Air Force security personnel. In a good non-violent witness it takes both sides to pull it off. Those who were with us at the gate would all agree the spirit of prayerfulness and respect was at the heart of our witness.
I want to thank Fr. Tom, Msgr. Paul and Charlie Wolford, all from our Harrison County Catholic Family for taking the personal risk to say with their bodies what they believe in their hearts. A very special thank you to Bishop Dingman who at great sacrifice cleared a fully scheduled day of meetings in Des Moines so he could be with us as a sign of support for those crossing the line.
As we get closer to the fall, and the Farm Crisis starts to force more and more folks off their land, such dramatic witnesses will become common and hopefully the spirit of non-violence that marked our August 6th effort will stay with us as we enter these difficult times.
