The weekly Friday Vigils began February 8, 2008, the first Friday of Lent, as part of the Blessed Franz Jagerstatter Lenten Fast and Prayer to Break the Silence Campaign. This effort has been a national prayer and fasting campaign that took place throughout the Lenten season in reparation for our silence and the silence of our church in not condemning the invasion and ongoing occupation of Iraq by our military. See the Franz Jagerstatter, People Breaking the Silence, web page for more information www.FranzPrayForUs.org
In the Des Moines Diocese the campaign consisted of three actions:
1) As many signatures as possible were add to national petition to join the national prayer and fasting campaign. The nature and extent of fasting and prayer has been determined by each individual who joined the campaign. A total of 106 people signed-on.
2) Silent vigils were held on the sidewalk across the street from St. Ambrose Cathedral on the north side of the Des Moines Diocesan Pastoral Center on High Street each Friday during lent for the half hour (11:40 a.m.) before the 12:10 p.m. mass. See Slide Show for Photos of Vigils
3) The list of the 106 names collected during the campaign were given to Msgr Steve Orr, our designated diocesan administrator (since the DM Diocese has no Bishop at this time) on Easter Sunday.
